OTWorld features continued specialist training for new entrants to the sector
Around 500 participants from Germany and abroad expected at the Youth.Academy TO.
The Youth Academy for Technical Orthopaedics (Youth.Academy TO) is an initiative for cross-specialist development of young entrants to the sector. Once again at OTWorld 2018 the trainees and students in orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic footwear technology, physiotherapy and medicine will be offered a broad programme.
Demographic change means not only that we are getting older and more ill, but also that in future we shall lack young entrants to the profession who are able and willing to take on the supply of high-quality medical aids for patient care. In Germany orthopaedic technicians have long been recognised as a profession with insufficient members, says the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology. And the doctors too report that fewer and fewer young medical practitioners are able and willing to take further training in technical orthopaedics. That will have dramatic consequences for patient care – not just in Germany.
Last year the World Health Organisation (WHO) published some shocking figures. Thus, more than 75 percent of poorer countries world-wide have no training programmes in O&P. Accordingly, the countries which most need such programmes are, as a rule, those which have the lowest supply of specialists.
International meeting point
The German Association of Orthopaedic Technology, in close collaboration with Leipziger Messe, has created a specialist platform at OTWorld for the further training and exchange of young entrants to the sector – the fourth time such an event will have taken place in Leipzig.
“Every two years the Youth.Academy TO offers a unique combination of further training, learning from international experts, interdisciplinary exchange and a general overview of the current state of technology at the biggest trade show in the sector”, explains Klaus-Jürgen Lotz, President of the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology. “This scheme provides sustainable professional relationships and creates an awareness of how important continuous – and, above all, interdisciplinary – further training is. That constitutes the enormous difference and fantastic success of the Youth.Academy TO.
Young specialists have already announced they will be there in 2018: around 500 participants are expected, including, for the first time, new entrants to the sector from Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland.
The Youth.Academy TO has been launched by Trainees and Teachers in Orthopaedic Technology (ALLOF e.V.); its conceptual partner is the German Association of Orthopaedic Technology.
A full learning experience
With a reduced-price ticket for 17 and 18 May, participants at the Youth.Academy TO will have numerous opportunities to expand their knowledge and expertise. Under the motto “Further training, exchange and celebration”, among the opportunities available will be a chance to meet the leading minds in the sector in Hall 1 of the OTWorld Congress Centre (CCO). There international experts will be speaking on topics covering every aspect of modern patient care. The programme will also include a get-together at midday and a party for meeting people, exchanging information and networking on the Thursday evening.
Students‘ Day
At OTWorld 2018, in collaboration with Professor Christoph Josten of Leipzig University Hospital and the University of Leipzig, a Students’ Day will be held for the first time at the Youth.Academy TO, and further interested parties are cordially invited from 2.00 to 2.30 p.m. on 17 May to in interdisciplinary lecture in Hall 5.
