Transportation and logistics
Leipziger Messe is directly connected to the public transit system of Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB): Trams and buses travel to the exhibition grounds at regular intervals. During the trade fairs, route cycles are adjusted to accommodate higher passenger volumes.
Through its own trade fair train station, the grounds are also connected to the rail network of Deutsche Bahn and hence provide quick access to the Leipzig/Halle airport and the main train station.
Leipziger Messe offers exhibitors and visitors to the trade fair the option of riding in the public transit system of the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) for free. This reduces the per capita CO2 emissions.
At the 50th congress of the International Congress and Convention Association in October of 2011, instead of columns of shuttle busses the approximately 1,000 participants used the ICCA tram, providing comfortable, flexible travel in an environmentally-friendly manner. This project was implemented by trainees from the Leipziger Messe corporate group, including the Congress Center Leipzig and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB), the local public transportation provider. In addition, a cooperative agreement with Germany’s Deutsche Bahn AG rail company provided discounts for congress participants travelling to and from the congress. In February of 2013, this innovative transport concept was awarded the "Meeting Experts Green Award" initiated by the GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. and the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC). The jury commented, "The 'ICCA Green Traffic Project' concept highlighted the topic of sustainable mobility in a very successful way”. At the 38th Germany Travel Mart 2012 in Leipzig, the concept was again applied in a similar manner. "This concept can and should be taken as a model for other cities with similar public transportation facility infrastructures", the jury declared. A variety of event industry congresses are now looking to the project as an example of best practice.
When planning business travel, the travel agent for Leipziger Messe will select three travel options for each employee, which take into account CO2 emissions in addition to time and costs. This makes it easier for employees to select a climate-friendly travel route.
Two electricity fuelling stations of Leipziger Stadtwerke, each with four charge points, on the parking lot of the Messehaus and Congress Center Leipzig enable owners of electric cars or bikes to fill up their e-vehicles with an environmentally-friendly source of fuel. To use the charging stations, please register at www.swl.de/elektromobilitaet. With the two charging stations, Leipziger Messe supports the increasing popularity of electric cars in daily traffic settings and thus the sustainable development of the region.
