Energy supply and ecological measures

The Leipziger Messe group of companies views sustainable action as the efficient use of resources, the use of bio-degradable substances and ecological action, among others.

For this reason, the chemicals that are needed for managing the inside and outside areas of the exhibition grounds consist of bio-degradable substances that have been approved by the regional authority. Some examples include:

• Dishwashing liquids used at Leipziger Messe are not harmful with respect to toxicology, and meet the requirements of the law regarding the environmental compatibility of wash and cleaning agents.

• Textiles are cleaned by the cleaning service provider using an innovative and gentle wet-cleaning method, with sponges and soap. This ensures that chemical stresses for humans and the environment are kept to a minimum even with sensitive fabrics.

A separate cogeneration power station optimises energy consumption at Leipziger Messe. With a total capacity of approximately 800 Kilowatt (electrical), the Leipziger Messe group of companies covers most of the basic electricity and heat requirements on the grounds. This facility, which cost approximately one million euros to build, consists of two separate modules in a separate sub-ground equipment room. The presence of separate modules makes it easier to service electricity and heat requirements, and offers more flexibility for bridging maintenance intervals. The cogeneration power station produces electricity and heat on a decentralised basis using combined heat and power generation.

The cooling of the exhibition halls and congress centre is regulated by a central air-conditioning system, which consists of refrigeration units and ice storage system. The ice storage system makes it possible to bridge periods of minimal loads, during which the capacity utilisation of the air-conditioning system is low, without having to turn on the powerful unit. A low-load facility supports the delivery of cool air throughout the year.

The distribution of heat and cold air is controlled via central building control technology, taking into account the buildings that are currently in use. If trade fair halls are not in use or are retrofitted for the next event, only the energy that is required to maintain the building substance is applied.

The philosophy of returning to nature what humans have taken away is also followed with respect to on-roof greenspace. This achieves both economic objectives and ecological benefits, as nature retains a portion of the area that was taken previously. A green roof extends the lifetime of the roof seal because it acts as a mechanical barrier against extreme temperatures, UV radiation and other weathering effects.

Besides a nearby vegetation area that is home to a variety of sedum species, the green roofs covering a total area of 17,961m² also offer an important habitat for rare animal species. They include the dragonfly varieties "Grüne Flussjungfer" and "Hufeisen Azurjungfer" and even "Helle Wiesenknopf" - a butterfly species on the list of endangered species. Even the "Grosse Schnegel" ("Tigerschnegel") can now be found residing on the roof. This zoological highlight belongs to the slug family.

fairgourmet is a patron of trees. Employees of the catering subsidiary of Leipziger Messe donated a tree for the "greening" of Leipzig's downtown area. It participates in the campaign "Für eine baumstarke Stadt", in which companies, associations or private individuals make donations for planting trees in Leipzig. The donated linden tree bears the botanical name Tilia cordata "Greenspire". It has small, dark green glossy leaves, is described as adaptable and resistant to city climates, and can grow up to 20 metres. A small insignia on the ground makes reference to the patron.

Ecological measures also helped with managing the problem of pigeon faeces. This matter was solved with the help of "Mother Nature" - the settlement of kestrels on the trade fair tower (Messeturm).
