Messesee (exhibition lake)
Visitors are welcomed by the Messesee - also referred to as Merkurbrunnen - in front of the West entrance at the front of the Glass Hall. Willows and chestnut trees line the approximately 8,500 square metre water surface. The basin measures around 10,500 square metres. Its longitudinal shape is reminiscent of the basin in front of the Leipziger Völkerschlachtdenkmal, one of the city's well-known symbols.
Original ideas are setting new trends: A tree is "swimming" on an island, there is a fountain, and visitors can use the "Mosesweg", which divides the water surface to get to the other side. It conveys the impression of walking on water.
